A New Development Amidst a Construction Boom
Nestled within the colonial charm of Williamsburg, Virginia, Governor’s Inn Apartments stands as a testament to the ongoing surge in apartment complex developments sweeping across the Mid-Atlantic region. Amidst this construction boom, the site’s stormwater management system underwent a significant transformation, showcasing the ingenuity and adaptability of modern engineering solutions. This case study exemplifies stormwater management innovation in action.
The Original Design: A Concrete Colossus
Initially, the site featured two separate stormwater management systems, each meticulously designed using precast concrete modules known as StormCapture®. These massive modules, measuring 7-feet wide by 15-feet long by 10-feet high, formed the backbone of the original design. System #1 boasted an impressive 36 modules, while System #2 comprised 15 modules. However, the sheer size and complexity of these modules posed challenges during installation, prompting the contractor to seek a more streamlined alternative meant to encourage stormwater innovation.
A Steel Solution: Streamlining and Savings
In response to the contractor’s concerns, a proposal was put forth to replace the unwieldy modular system with a network of perforated, 96-inch diameter aluminized corrugated steel pipes (CSP). This innovative solution, a prime example of stormwater management innovation, promised not only a simplified installation process but also significant cost savings, making it an attractive proposition for the project.
Overcoming Obstacles: Gaining Approval
While the contractor readily embraced the proposed CSP system, the engineer initially expressed reservations. However, after careful consideration and discussions highlighting the numerous advantages of the CSP alternative, the engineer ultimately acquiesced, paving the way for the revision of the construction plans. The City, recognizing the merits of the revised design and the significance of innovations in stormwater planning, granted its approval without delay.
