The Bridge That Closed

In 2016, authorities closed the concrete bridge on Toblin Hill Drive in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. Inspectors deemed the bridge unsafe. It soared over a wetland stream. The Toblin Hill Drive Bridge served as a vital link for the Toblin Hill neighborhood. The Toblin Hill Drive Bridge Replacement project began two years later when demolition crews tore down the structure. Workers installed a small pipe bridge to carry utilities across the ravine.

A New Bridge Takes Shape

The community needed a replacement bridge. They wanted to reconnect Toblin Hill. Fortunately, Contech stepped forward with a solution for the Toblin Hill Drive Bridge Replacement. They designed a custom structural plate two-radius galvanized steel arch bridge. This innovative design allowed engineers to reuse the original foundations. Furthermore, it also maintained the existing road alignment. Additionally, the design accommodated the utility crossing in its current location. Ultimately, the town selected the structural plate solution. Construction crews completed the Toblin Hill Drive Bridge Replacement in 2023.

Building a Community Connection

The new bridge spanned 39 feet, 6 inches. It reached a height of 11 feet, 4 inches. It measured 50 feet, 3 inches wide. Crews pre-assembled the structure in three sections. They carefully set these sections onto the footings. The lightweight steel arch sections slid easily into place beneath the existing utility lines.

Next, workers sprayed a bituminous membrane onto the arch. This membrane provided extra protection against corrosion. Moreover, it also ensured the bridge’s longevity. Subsequently, an MSE wall system with precast facing finished both ends of the bridge. Finally, with construction complete, the community celebrated the Toblin Hill Drive Bridge Replacement. As a result, the bridge restored vital connectivity to the neighborhood.
