In March of 2016, Crittenden Co., KY decided to replace a structural plate bridge built in approximately 1945.  This bridge is located in the most northern part of the county on Hurricane Church Road, approximately five miles south of the “Cave in Rock” ferry, which still crosses over the Ohio River many times each date.  This bridge has allowed safe passage over a tributary of Caney Fork Creek for many years providing access to the historic Old Hurricane Methodist Church and Cemetery where you can find some of the oldest graves in Crittenden County – some dating back before the Civil War.

The galvanized arched structural plate, which has served the community for over 70 years, had come to the end of its service life.  In an effort to best serve the country and local community, Crittenden County, KY did their research and chose to replace it with what they determined was the top available option.

Although the county had to reservations with installing this culvert themselves they selected to hire Belt Construction, based out of Marion, KY, to do the installation for them.  They were able to use the existing concrete head-wall since the replacement culvert had the same dimensions as the structural plate bridge.  The project went very well and Crittenden County was happy that they were able to provide their citizens with another successful and safe bridge replacement.  In fact, they found such comfort in this solution that they ordered another 75′ of 120″ arch 8 ga polymer riveted pipe for a similar project in the county.
