A new $250 million distribution center code named “Project Jasper” was revealed by Forest Park, Georgia city officials. This expansive distribution center was slated to be built on about 300 acres of land – roughly one-million square feet and anticipated an extremely high volume of stormwater runoff.
As a result – the distribution center would require a large drainage system to handle this influx of increased runoff. Lowe Engineers, the project engineer, originally specified reinforced concrete pipe (RCP), but also pursued alternative methods in an effort to lower cost and speed up construction. After an informative conversation with Contech Engineered Solutions, Lowe became aware of the positives of utilizing a spiral rib pipe with a smooth interior that weighs less than 10% of concrete pipe. This pipe also delivered a Manning’s “n” of 0.012, which is just as efficient as RCP, while also providing a substantial savings in construction time and cost of the overall site package.
This change to the design allowed Contech to provide a spiral rib storm sewer drainage system ranging in diameters from 24-inch to 96-inch, in 20’ sections that resulted in large savings in material, installation times, and material costs over the alternative RCP option.
Strack, Inc. and Brad Cole Construction, contractors employed to complete the project, installed the entire system through trench boxes in under four months, much sooner than originally expected, which allowed the entire project to stay on track.
