Interstate 35 Infrastructure Enhancement Project

The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) initiated a comprehensive infrastructure project to improve Interstate 35. The project encompassed bridge construction and widening a substantial eight-mile segment of the interstate from two to three lanes in each direction. This highway infrastructure improvement development was aimed at enhancing the highway conditions and safety for daily commuters.

Surface Water Management

The extensive road widening required significant leveling and resurfacing, creating a critical need for effective surface water management. To address this, the DOT installed a high-performance slotted drain pipe system manufactured by Contech Engineered Solutions. The choice of this innovative highway infrastructure improvement solution would play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and functionality of the newly improved areas of the roadway.

System Design & Installation

The system features 6,444 linear feet of 36-inch diameter slotted drain pipe with 6-inch grates. Manufactured locally in Iowa, crews quickly delivered and easily integrated the system into the existing roadway edge. The choice of a six-inch grate height aligns with industry standards for AASHTO H 20 loading, reinforcing its suitability for this project.

System Performance & Benefits

Engineers designed the slotted drain pipe system to withstand heavy traffic loads and thermal changes, ensuring long-term durability and performance. This new highway infrastructure improvement system would effectively manage surface water runoff, which would significantly improve roadway conditions during adverse weather events. This protects the infrastructure investment and enhances safety for motorists.

Proven Track Record & Project Success

The Iowa DOT and Polk County’s positive experiences and confidence with similar highway infrastructure improvement solutions supported the decision to implement the slotted drain pipe system. This proven track record, combined with the system’s efficient installation and effective performance, contributed to the overall success of the Interstate 35 infrastructure enhancement project.
